The Catholic Church has been a part of English history since the arrival of Christian missionaries to Roman Britain in the first century after Christ. England was evangelized in these early centuries to such an extent that, by the time the Romans withdrew in the fifth century, the Celtic population was largely Catholic.
Anglo-Saxon England, prior to the Norman Conquest, was a land of saints. From St. Bede, with his history of the early Church, to the holy king St. Edward the Confessor, Saxon England was ablaze with the light of Christ. During the reign of St. Edward, a vision of the Virgin at Walsingham placed the Mother of God on the throne as England's queen, the land being considered her dowry. Even following the Norman Conquest, the Faith continued to flourish and prosper, making its joyful presence felt in what would become known as Merrie England.
Then in the sixteenth century, this Catholic heart was ripped from the people of England, against their will and in spite of their spirited and heroic resistance, by the reign of the Tudors. This made England once again a land of saints—that is, of martyrs, with Catholic priests and laity being put to death for practicing the Faith. The martyrdoms would continue for 150 years, followed by a further 150 years of legal and political persecution.
In the nineteenth century, against all the odds, there was a great Catholic revival, heralded by the conversion of St. John Henry Newman, which would continue into the twentieth century. Much of the greatest literature of the past century has been written by literary converts to the Church, such as G. K. Chesterton, Evelyn Waugh, Graham Greene, and J. R. R. Tolkien.
This whole exciting, faith-filled story is told by Joseph Pearce within a single-volume history of "true England", the England that remained true to the faith through thick and thin, in times both "merrie" and perilous. It is a story not only worth telling but worth celebrating.

Tabby Long is a non-Christian girl in a Catholic school whose world gets turned upside down when her dad, who has never been a man of faith, experiences a miraculous healing on Good Friday. Her father’s dramatic religious conversion alienates her mother, who deserts the family. About the Author

She appeared to him again and told him to go the hill where they first met, where he unexpectedly found roses He gathered them in his tilma (cloak) and took them to the bishop as proof of her request. Both were amazed to see the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe on his tilma when he opened it!

About the Author
Fr. John Henry Hanson, O. Praem., is a Norbertine priest of St. Michael's Abbey in Silverado, CA. He entered the community in 1995, earned his STB and master's in theology at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas (Angelicum) in Rome, and was ordained to the priesthood in 2006. Currently, he is a formator in his community's seminary, in addition to teaching at St. Michael's Preparatory School, the boarding school operated by the Norbertine Fathers. He also preaches retreats, is chaplain to several communities of women religious, and serves Armenian rite Catholics at the Cathedral of St. Gregory the Illuminator in Glendale, CA.

Elwood Euart was born in 1914 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, the second of seven children in a faithful Catholic family. Athletic, responsible, and likeable, Elwood was just an ordinary guy growing up in the 1920s and ’30s. He had his share of victories and defeats, accomplishments and setbacks, joys and heartaches. He went to Mass, helped his family, went to college, embarked on a military career, and advanced to the rank of captain in the U.S. Army.
On October 26, 1942, in the South West Pacific Theatre of World War II, he and over 5,000 troops were aboard the SS President Coolidge when it struck two American mines while approaching a naval base. Those who were able to make it safely to shore watched as Elwood risked his life by returning to the vessel to save the remaining men on board. After rescuing the men from the infirmary unit, he was unable to escape and went down with the ship.
Sister Lucia Treanor, a direct relative of Elwood, tells of his extraordinary heroism in the face of danger. But Elwood: The Story of a Catholic World War II Hero is more than that — it is the story of true faith and real virtue, born of a love for God and others, which gave the young Captain Euart the fortitude to do what was needed when the time came.
